Introduction
If you?re shopping for an inexpensive all-in-one inkjet, you know you?re going to have to give up something substantial in features, quality, or performance. (Otherwise, how could today's printer manufacturers sell their higher-priced models?) That may seem logical, but a printer isn?t just an end product. Manufacturers make a large portion of their profits from the ink cartridges and other add-ons that you buy over the life of the printer. That potential additional revenue is incentive enough to offer feature-rich, low-cost models, even if they bump up against the same maker's higher-priced models.
A good example is the HP Photosmart 7510. It has a street price of just $149.99, yet it has a nice list of once-premium features: a high-resolution color touch screen, Wi-Fi, duplex printing, and a memory-card slot. Best of all, HP didn?t slow down or compromise on the print quality with this model. The print speeds are competitive among recent inkjet models, and the print quality was excellent across the board?whether the output was pure text?or glossy photos.
So what?s not to like about the Photosmart 7510? A few things, but they're not huge. There?s no Ethernet port for direct network connections. (You?ll need to use USB or Wi-Fi.) It?s also missing a dedicated USB port for bringing in photos via a flash drive. (For that, you?ll need to use the memory-card slot instead.) The touch screen can be a little finicky. And the print costs are on the high side, unless you purchase HP's large-capacity ink cartridges.
These would be significant drawbacks with a higher-priced printer. At this price, though, they?re more annoyances than fatal flaws. All in all, the Photosmart 7510 is a surprisingly well-equipped printer selling at a very attractive price.
