1. The Detroit Auto Show is in full swing and many new models have been announced or teased. There is a high level of excitement at the show despite the uncertainty of the economy and the auto business.

2. The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder concept will be built and will rely on unibody construction.

3. At the Detroit auto show the Hyundai Elantra was named 2012 North American Car of the Year and the Range Rover Evoque was named 2012 Truck of the Year.

4. Ford debuted the 2013 Fusion at the Detroit Auto Show and it?s absolutely stunning. It has a European, pretty, low-slung look. It almost looks as if Ian Callum designed it. Expect big things from this car.

5. In other news: No longer a tease, Dodge showed off the new Dart at the Detroit Auto Show. But did you get a load of that Ford Fusion?

6. Ford says SYNC is a success. Ford says the connectivity software has found its way into four million cars since its introduction in 2007. With European and Asian buyers getting SYNC for the first time this year, and North American offerings like the Fusion and Flex getting it as standard equipment, Ford expects to add nine million more users by 2015.

7. Car Advice reports that VW sold 8.16 million units in 2011, marking the first time it has eclipsed eight million global sales.. Toyota finished 2011 with 7.9 million sales, in part because of production disruptions resulting from the March earthquake in Japan.

8. BMW says it is expanding its operations in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The company has announced it will invest $990 million into the facility over the next three years to allow the plant to produce up to 350,000 vehicles each year.

9. Chevy announced a special edition 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible, complete with hardware borrowed from the mighty Corvette Z06. Under the hood, a 427-cubic-inch LS7 V8 produces 505 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, making this the most powerful Corvette Convertible ever produced. There will also be a 60th Anniversary package available with or without the 427 package.

10. Fiat announced pricing on the 2012 500 Abarth. MSRP starts at $22,000, *not including destination charges. The base car costs just $15,500. Abarth buyers get Fiat?s turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir engine producing 160 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. This makes the Fiat the most powerful in weight to horsepower ratio of its competition including the GTI, Mini Cooper S and Veloster Turbo.

Turk gets life term for role in journalist killing (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A Turkish court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life in prison for masterminding the killing of an ethnic Armenian journalist hated by hardline nationalists, but acquitted all 19 suspects of charges of acting under a terrorist organization's orders.

The verdict deeply disappointed the lawyers and family of Hrant Dink, who was gunned down outside of his office five years ago. Fethiye Cetin, a lawyer for the Dink family, said the trial failed to shed light on "the darkness" ? alleged connections between the suspects and some state officials.

The case has been widely seen as a test of whether the judiciary can fully investigate possible negligence by authorities, who allegedly knew about plots to kill the journalist.

It also highlights Turkey's uneasy relationship with its ethnic and religious minorities, which include at least 60,000 Armenian Christians in a mostly Muslim nation of more than 70 million.

After the decision, hundreds of activists began marching toward the scene where Dink was gunned down outside his Agos newspaper and promised to gather again at the spot of his murder on Thursday, the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 19 killing.

"This case is not over ... for us this case is just starting," said Cetin, vowing to appeal the verdict and likening the trial process to a "comedy."

A panel of judges found Yasin Hayal guilty of instigating Dink's killing, and gave him the life term despite a plea by a prosecutor that the court should sentence seven of the suspects to life in prison, including Erhan Tuncel ? who until now has been portrayed as another key instigator.

The court, however, sentenced Tuncel to 10 1/2 years in prison for a separate crime, his role in a bombing a McDonald's restaurant in 2004 in Black Sea port city of Trabzon and ordered his release from prison since he already completed his term while awaiting a verdict.

Dink had angered nationalists and had been prosecuted under Turkish law for describing the mass killings of Armenians in the early 20th century as genocide. Turkey denies the deaths constituted genocide, insisting those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.

Gunman Ogun Samast was sentenced to nearly 23 years in prison in July for "premeditated murder" by a separate, juvenile court. Samast was allegedly connected to Hayal but the court decision suggested the suspects who know each other were not acting as a gang and that Samast carried out the assassination alone under orders from Hayal.

Pakistan PM Gilani wins key backing in Parliament

Pakistan's Parliament passed a key resolution Monday that backed Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani as he faces pressure from the Army and the Supreme Court.

Pakistan?s Parliament passed a key resolution Monday night calling for the country?s other state institutions ? the Army and Supreme Court ? to remain within their constitutional limits.

The resolution is a welcome boost for beleaguered Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani who earlier in the day was charged by the Supreme Court with contempt for failing to reopen old corruption cases against his ally President Asif Ali Zardari. If found guilty, Mr. Gilani faces dismissal and the possibility of jail time.

Gilani described Monday?s vote as ?a welcome day for democracy,? adding that it endorses Parliament?s supremacy.

Pakistan's military traditionally enjoys wide latitude in shaping the country's national security policies and has stepped in numerous times?? often with the Supreme Court's blessing???to overthrow civilian governments that challenged its authority. The Gilani government has been trying to circumscribe the military's role particularly after the embarrassing discovery of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in a military garrison town last year.?Last week, Pakistan?s Army issued a statement criticizing the Prime Minister and promising ?grievous consequences,? raising fears of another military coup.

Today's backing in Parliament suggests Pakistan's political leadership prefers Gilani and his government to stay in office until elections expected later this year. This support from Parliament, as well as recent warm statements by Gilani toward the military, have tamped down the concerns about a coup ??for now.

Zaffar Abbas, editor of leading-English daily Dawn, says the resolution will strengthen Gilani's hand, despite a last-ditch walk-out by some opposition parties.

?The majority want the system to continue. If a consensus had been reached they would have liked it, but still the house has passed it,? he says.

However, the future of the government still remains uncertain as it faces down two major cases in court.?

The first concerns a political amnesty known as the National Reconciliation Ordinance which was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2009. When the Court overturned the amnesty, it expected Gilani to help reopen old corruption cases against President Zardari.

Zardari argued, however, that as head of state he enjoys immunity from prosecution, and Gilani did not pursue it. That may change as court pressure on Gilani mounts.?

According to Supreme Court advocate Feisal Naqvi, the ruling Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) may end up sending a letter to Swiss authorities to help reopen the old cases against President Zardari before the next date of hearing on Thursday, in order to avoid Gilani?s dismissal.?

Mr. Abbas, on the other hand, says the judiciary is more likely to get the prime minister?s legal team to respond to the contempt charges rather than dismissing the prime minister.

The second case relates to a secret memorandum sent by unknown persons to the United States, seeking American help in curtailing Pakistan?s Army. Zardari denies any role in the scandal, which cost former Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani his job. Mansoor Ijaz, a US businessmen who says he co-authored the memo and brought it to light, is due to give evidence to the court on Jan. 25.?

A further interesting aspect to Monday?s vote was a failure by Pakistan?s main opposition party, the PML-N, to side with the government despite a recent record of standing up to the Army. The resolution still passed with a majority of parliament including some members of other opposition parties.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali, leader of the opposition in parliament, attempted to table amendments to the resolution requiring the government to endorse all orders of the Supreme Court and refrain from making hostile statements toward the Army in public. When those amendments failed, he led a walk-out, saying: ?There is no threat to democracy. This incompetent government is trying to support itself through this hollow resolution.?

According to senior Pakistani journalist Amir Mateen, the statements represent a mellowing of the party?s anti-Army stance which it has held since elections in 2008 and may be the result of an attempt to make political hay in what politicians and pundits alike expect to be an election year.

ABC ditches 'Work It' sitcom (omg!)

PASADENA, California (AP) ? ABC television's "Work It" is off duty.

The network said Saturday that the TV comedy about two men who dress as women to look for work is off the schedule after only two episodes aired. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation had protested the series, saying it mocked the transgender community.

"Work It" attracted little interest from viewers. The Nielsen company said the second episode on Tuesday was seen by less than five million people.

GLAAD's Herndon Graddick said Saturday that it was an outdated show. But he said it started a dialogue about discrimination faced by transgender people.
