More News: Apple Diving Down The Stock Exchange While Dell Swings Upwards

January 17, 2013

The second Monday of 2013 saw the S&P 500 as well as the Nasdaq ending much lower. This is mainly because of speculations over demand regarding Apple products. This apparently drove down shares. Investors have been busy bracing themselves to face disappointments in their earnings.

However, the interesting fact to be noted is Dell Inc?s stocks actually climbed up 13 percent. This is supposed to be a 5-month high standing at 12.29 dollars. This comes soon after the Bloomberg reports of Dell holding talks with private equity firms regarding going private.

Undoubtedly considered the tech stalwart, Apple went down by at least 3.6 percent. This stood at 501.75 dollars. This was not just the biggest weight on the S&P 500, but also on Nasdaq 100. This was followed by reports of the company having cut orders for the LCD screens and various other parts of the iPhone 5. These orders have apparently been cancelled for the first quarter of 2013 and this is a result of weak demand as well.

There?s more that?s adding to the unease of investors actually. Fact is the fourth quarter earnings are kicking into high gear in the 2nd week of the New Year itself. Ever since October 2012, the analyst estimates for the quarter have been on a steady downward slide. In fact, the growth meter of S&P 500 is now seen up by a mere 1.9 percent from a year ago. Experts are of the opinion that tech happens to be such a domain that has become an arena for private equity type of maneuvers.

GOP lawmakers see automatic cuts as leverage

Click photo to enlarge

FILE - In this Dec. 21, 2012 file photo, Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, speaks to reporters about the fiscal cliff negotiations at the Capitol in Washington. There's a growing sense of resignation that the country's political leaders will be unable or unwilling to find a way around looming automatic spending cuts despite fresh signs the cuts would threaten the recovering economy.

WASHINGTON?There's a growing sense of resignation that the country's political leaders will be unable or unwilling to find a way around looming automatic spending cuts despite fresh signs the cuts would threaten the recovering economy.

On one side are conservative Republicans, outnumbered and frustrated, who see the painfully large cuts as leverage in their battle to force Democrats into concessions on the budget. On the other side are President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies, who are pressing to replace some of the cuts with new tax revenues.

The predictable deadlock?and looming cuts of $85 billion this budget year alone?has the potential to slam the economy, produce sweeping furloughs and layoffs at federal agencies and threatens hundreds of thousands of private sector jobs.

The cuts would shrink the Pentagon budget by 7 percent and force most domestic agencies to absorb a 5 percent cut concentrated in the last half of the budget year.

Just last year, GOP leaders were among the loudest voices warning of dire consequences for the military and the economy if more than $100 billion in cuts across the board went into effect. Now, even as defense hawks fume, Republicans see the strategy as their best chance of wringing cuts from costly government benefit programs like Medicare that Obama and his Democratic allies in Congress have been reluctant to touch.

The move is fraught with risk. Some $43 billion would be cut from the Pentagon budget between March and October if battling Democrats and Republicans can't agree on an alternative. Equal cuts would hit domestic programs, although the health care programs that are major drivers of future deficits are largely exempt.

"Talk about letting the sequester kick in, as though that were an acceptable thing, belies where Republicans were on this issue not that long ago," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday. "This is sort of political brinksmanship of the kind that results in one primary victim, and that's American taxpayers?the American middle class."

The automatic cuts, known as a "sequester" in Washington-speak, are the penalty for the failures of the 2011 deficit "supercommittee" and subsequent rounds of budget talks to produce an agreement.

Along with the threatened expiration of Bush-era tax cuts, the spending cuts were a major element of the so-called fiscal cliff crisis that gripped the country at the new year. While most of the tax cuts?except for upper-bracket income?were made permanent, negotiators could only agree on a two-month reprieve to the sequester after finding $24 billion in replacement money that reduced this year's round of cuts from $109 billion to $85 billion. Eight more years of cuts, totaling almost $1 trillion, still remain.

The austerity, economists say, would slow down the economy. Under a formula by the Congressional Budget Office, a $43 billion cut in defense spending could cost 300,000 jobs this year.

"In terms of the political dynamic here, defense spending is only 20 percent of the federal budget, but it's taking 50 percent of the cuts, which means it's going to be hitting the Republicans a lot harder than the Democrats," said defense analyst Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute think tank.

On Wednesday, the government reported that the economy shrank by 0.1 percent in the last quarter of 2012 and said a slowdown in defense spending and uncertainty over the automatic spending cuts could have kicked in at the start of the year.

Last year, Republicans issued dire warnings of the impact the cuts would have. Defense hawks like Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., made campaign tours in political swing states like Virginia and Florida lambasting the cuts, warning that the reductions would hollow out the Pentagon and cost many thousands of jobs. They reminded voters that the sequester was an idea developed by Democrats during 2011 negotiations on increasing the government's borrowing cap.

"The White House is responsible for the 'sequester' that threatens our national security," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in September. "History has taught us we can't continue with policies that jeopardize our defenses or weaken our economy."

This year's GOP move to embrace the sequester was hatched at a recent strategy retreat for House Republicans in Williamsburg, Va. Much of the retreat was devoted to coming up with a way to solve a more urgent issue: finding a way to get the tea party-infused House to again increase the debt limit and prevent an economically devastating, first-ever default on U.S. obligations. The party agreed on a strategy to punt the debt dilemma until May or later and instead use the sequester as leverage in the budget debate.

A senior House GOP aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss party strategy, said some Republicans see the sequester as their best opportunity to achieve spending cuts. That strategy, however, is rife with potential to split open the Republican Party and pits the defense hawks against the tea party.

How people would actually react should the across-the-board cuts hit is anyone's guess. But it's not lost on anyone with institutional history that Republicans got creamed in a similar situation in 1995-96 when they sparked a partial government shutdown under the leadership of House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the warring parties should try to figure it all out, but he set up a clash with Republicans over using new taxes to fix the problem.

Reid said the sequester cuts should be replaced "in short increments" with spending cuts and revenues like repealing oil and gas subsidies, which were discussed in earlier negotiations.

"There are many low-hanging pieces of fruit out there that Republicans have said they agreed on previously," Reid said. There's a lot of things we can do out there, and we're going to make an effort to make sure that there is?sequestration is?involves revenue."

Jet delivered just 3 weeks before battery fire

15 hrs.

WASHINGTON?--?Federal investigators say the Boeing 787 Dreamliner that experienced a battery fire earlier this month was delivered to Japan Airlines less than three weeks before the fire.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Sunday in an update of its investigation of the incident that the airliner was delivered on Dec. 20. It had only recorded 169 flight hours and 22 flights when the fire erupted in one of the airliner's two lithium ion batteries on Jan. 7.

The fire occurred at Logan International Airport shortly after the plane landed. NTSB said the battery was manufactured by GS Yuasa of Japan in September 2012.

A second battery incident led to an emergency landing by another 787 in Japan on Jan. 16. The 787 fleet worldwide has since been grounded.?

Tiger Woods starts fast at 2013 Farmers Insurance Open - SB Nation

After sitting out on Saturday, it didn't take long for Tiger Woods to get back on the South Course on Sunday and extend his lead with a quick birdie.

After a one-day postponement, Tiger Woods is now back out on the course at Torrey Pines for the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open. Woods lit up the North Course on Friday to take a two-shot lead at the midpoint of the tournament, but dense fog in the La Jolla area delayed Saturday's third round. A couple players got off the first tee, but the Tour promptly decided to scrap play for the day and schedule golf from sun-up to sundown on Sunday.

More: Can Tiger overcome recent weekend struggles?

And Woods is off to a steady start on Sunday, ripping his driver down the middle of the fairway on the first two holes. After an average approach shot, Woods had 21 feet left on the first green. He easily cleaned up with a two-putt par to stay at 11-under.

On the second hole, however, a perfect drive enabled Tiger to pull wedge for his second shot. He fired a dart to the center of the green, spinning it back to within a foot. With all the rain over the past two days at Torrey Pines, the greens will certainly be receptive on approach shots ? and Woods quickly demonstrated that on the second. After nearly sinking it with the wedge, he strolled up and quickly tapped in his birdie putt to move to 12-under and extend his lead to three shots over Billy Horschel, Josh Teater, and Brad Fritsch.

With 87 players making the cut, it's highly unlikely the tournament is wrapped up on Sunday. The Tour will not re-pair players, so Woods will play with Horschel and Casey Wittenberg during Sunday's march. It's likely he'll still have nine holes to play on a Monday finish. With the way Woods has looked so far, and the relatively underwhelming leaderboard around him, those final nine holes may be a formality on the way to his 75th career win.

Gay marriage legalized in Rhode Island?

Rhode Island took a big step towards legalizing gay marriage today: same-sex marriage passed the state legislature 51-19, but faces a tougher battle in the Rhode Island state senate.

Kelly Smith, of Providence, R.I., center, a member of Marriage Equality Rhode Island, hugs fellow member Wendy Becker, left, also of Providence, after a House committee vote on gay marriage on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Today, the Rhode Island House of Representatives voted 51-19 in favor of gay marriage.

Rhode Island's House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Thursday in favor of a bill to make same-sex marriage legal, but officials in the strongly Democratic state expect the measure to face an uphill battle in the state Senate.

Lawmakers voted 51 to 19 in favor of the bill, which aims to make Rhode Island the 10th state and the last in New England to legalize gay and lesbian weddings.

Democratic Representative Arthur Handy, lead sponsor of the bill, said the issue was "about fairness and allowing all Rhode Islanders to have equal access to the rights and responsibilities that come with marriage."

"It feels good to see how far we've come in Rhode Island toward valuing all families, and I know we are close to the day when marriage equality becomes law here," he said in a statement.

House Speaker Gordon Fox, a co-sponsor of the measure who is openly gay, said he was "thrilled."

"We are marching toward equality," he said in a statement.

The legislation, supported by independent Governor Lincoln Chafee, has been introduced in the House every year since 1997. Handy has put it forward annually since 2003.

Sponsors of the bill tried to move through similar legislation in 2011, but met with opposition and were forced to change the bill to allow civil unions only.

Rhode Island remains the last of New England's six states without a law allowing gay and lesbian couples to wed, after Maine legalized same-sex marriage late last year.

Nine of the 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia have legalized gay marriage. Maryland was the most recent, with gay marriage becoming legal there on Jan. 1.

Another 31 states have passed constitutional amendments restricting marriage to heterosexual couples.

In Rhode Island, it remained unclear how the proposal would fare in the state Senate, though Handy said that in the last election cycle, both legislative chambers had elected more "pro-equality" candidates than ever before.

The state Senate president, Teresa Paiva Weed, opposes gay marriage but has said she would allow a Senate Judiciary Committee vote on the bill if it passed in the House.

Senate spokesman Greg Pare said earlier on Thursday that predictions of a close Senate vote had not changed.

England Golf appoints new CEO

04-08 david joyThe director of Derbyshire Sport, David Joy, has been named the chief executive of England Golf, one of the most powerful positions in British golf.

His experience working with legislative and parliamentary bodies proved pivotal to the appointment, which hints towards some of the aims England Golf has for the next few years.

England Golf, the result of the 2012 merger between the men?s and women?s game, is the governing body for amateur golf in England, making it far and away the biggest golf union in Europe, with nearly 2,000 golf clubs and over 760,000 golf club members on its books. Almost every club golfer in England funds England Golf via a small levy in their subscription, and the body plays a major role in introducing the game to people, helping clubs operate as businesses and managing the handicapping system.

David, the former chief executive of Scottish Athletics, replaces John Petrie, who left last year and, like David, comes from a non-golfing background. He will begin work on April 22.

He said: ?This is a really exciting time for amateur golf following the merger of the men?s and women?s game.?I am delighted to be given the opportunity to join England Golf and to work with the board, the staff team, the volunteers at national, county and club level and our key partners, as we seek to take advantage of the many opportunities for golf development throughout England.?

Derbyshire Sport is one of 49 county sports partnerships in England and provides the strategic lead for sport and active recreation in the county. ??Within this role David has directed Derbyshire?s relationships with Sport England, Sports Coach UK and many national governing bodies of sport, including England Golf.

David is also a keen golfer and until recently was a member of Trentham Park Golf Club.

Nigel Evans, chair of the England Golf board, commented: ?We are delighted that David has agreed to join us.?His extensive experience in the governance of sport and working with a variety of stakeholders, including legislative and parliamentary bodies, will be extremely valuable.?We are looking forward to David using that experience to bring future development and further growth to England Golf.?

Microsoft adds live tile support to SkyDrive on Windows 8 and RT

This is likely not the biggest change SkyDrive will ever see, but Microsoft's still confident that Windows 8 and RT users of its cloud service are going to benefit from the latest tweak. And why wouldn't they, right? Earlier today, the Redmond-based company announced it's brought support for Live Tiles to the SkyDrive application on both Windows 8 and RT, with its main purpose being to show notifications rather than only being useful for launching the app. Naturally, this means folks will now be able to see relevant messages within the tiles when they make certain account modifications, including things like adding new files and quick previews of recently uploaded pictures. According to Microsoft, the novel feature will be available today, but it is rolling out gradually, so fret not if you're not seeing it pop up just yet.

Security Consultant Offers Business Security Tips-Drop Boxes

Security Consultant John M. White CPP, CHPA of Protection Management, LLC, recommends that businesses install cash drop boxes near registers.

According to security expert John M. White, CPP, CHPA, "Still to this day in many retail or food establishments a member of management will walk around collecting excess money from registers throughout the business day."? White says that there have been cases where robberies have occurred during this type of operation.? "It makes no sense that with all the resources that are available today that someone would be walking around to registers collecting, sometimes thousands of dollars, and then taking that money to the office.? All the while as patrons and customers look on," said White.? He went on to say that businesses can install drop boxes near the registers where employees can continuously drop cash and checks throughout their shifts, and those boxes can be emptied after-hours when the business is closed.

White suggests that businesses consider the following security tips:
? Keep only enough cash in the register to make change.? All large bills should be placed in a drop box as soon as they are received.
? Only collect the cash from these drop boxes when the business is closed.
? Do not leave cash in registers or drop boxes over-night.
? Insure that the size of the drop box is large enough to handle the number of drops that your staff makes each day.
? Securely attach the drop box so that it cannot be removed.
? Limit the access to the keys used to open the boxes, and keep them secured when not in use.
? Make sure all drops have the employee's name/date/time/amount of that drop attached.

Good Reads: Boomtown slum, democracy in progress, and 'rewilding' in the Netherlands

This week's good reads include a day in Kenya's bustling Kibera slum, the struggle to promote democracy in the Arab world, and a radical conservation theory in the Netherlands.

By Allison Terry,?Correspondent / January 7, 2013

A hairdresser braids a woman?s hair in her salon in Kenya?s Kibera slum.

The image of an African shantytown does not usually conjure up hope for economic prosperity. But Kibera, one of Nairobi?s slums and arguably Africa?s largest slum, is exactly that for the Kenyans who call it home. In The Economist, a writer chronicled a day in Kibera, describing the slum?s ebbs and flows, capturing its entrepreneurial spirit. People from all over Kenya leave their towns and villages for a chance to find work in Kibera?s ?thriving economic machine.?

The half-mile-by-two-mile area accommodates roughly 1 million people, wedged together in repurposed wood-and-corrugated-tin-roof structures. The alleys that wind through the slum vary in size, but there is no room for cars. Many of the residents work in nearby factories or offices. Others find economic opportunity in providing goods and services for Kibera?s residents.

When Cecilia Achieng moved to the slum, she started a school, at first renting space from an empty church. She eventually saved enough money to build six makeshift classrooms. After school, Ms. Achieng starts her second job: catering. She caters church events, funerals, and is even trying to get into weddings. In the evening, Achieng goes door to door offering her services as a hairdresser.

?To equate slums with idleness and misery is to misunderstand them,? the correspondent writes. ?Slums are far from hopeless places; many are not where economic losers end up, but rather reservoirs of tomorrow?s winners.?

The promise of the Arab Spring

As post-Arab Spring countries struggle to establish democratic institutions, pessimism about their ultimate success misses a broader lesson: Stable democracies have historically evolved from violent uprisings, initial failures, and stumbling blocks.

?These troubles ... are not a bug but a feature ? not signs of problems with democracy but evidence of the difficult, messy process of political development through which societies purge themselves of the vestiges of dictatorship and construct new and better democratic orders,? writes Sheri Berman in Foreign Affairs.

Critics who see Egypt, Libya, and other transitioning countries as democratic failures ignore the inherited social, cultural, and political dynamics in these countries, and a broader historical perspective. New democracies are not blank slates, writes Ms. Berman. In the aftermath of overthrowing dictators, countries must overcome the baggage that comes with authoritarian regimes ? distrust, animosity, and lack of civil organizations to deal with people?s demands. Islamism is filling that void in Egypt after Hosni Mubarak?s fall as religious organizations were the only places where people could participate and express themselves.

Why Is IT Planning Important | Tecnolandia reloaded

Condividi questa pagina con i tuoi amici:

All successful companies should articulate their goals, visions and objectives as the function of their company mission. IT planning is critical to make sure that the infrastructure and the systems of a company are supportive of the company objectives. A company has to face lots of problems in today?s world. Planning helps a company to predict the risks and opportunities that the company might face later on.

Strategic planning is a joint process that involves the company?s stakeholders and technology specialists in sessions designed to understand the future direction of the company and how the technology can allow the company to achieve success. Every company is different. Therefore every strategic plan has to be different to cater to the requirements of the company?s specific mission.

Why Do IT Planning?
Whether small, medium or large company, IT strategic planning serves several purposes and is important if you want to make your business successful. A great plan not only reduces the operational costs of the company but also improves the customer service without requiring any substantially large investment.

What Does IT Planning Include?
An IT strategic plan includes the mission and vision statements, stakeholders analysis, identification of performance indicators, organizational values, identification of critical goals, strategies as well as associated action plans.

Focusing On The Business
In a technology strategy, a company should mention all the requirements that are critical for the company and how they are relevant to the company functions. These requirements typically include the information needs of workers and the need for IT, software as well as the machines needed in the company.

Project Planning
Project management factors are also critical in IT strategic budgeting. The company may include a large-scale plan development of new software that can automate company activities. IT consultants of the organization have an important function here. IT development project involves phases, for example design, implementation, as well as development. All the resources needed on different phases are also projected. Proper scheduling is critical to make sure each project stage is finished in time and to prevent costs from exceeding the budget.

Supervising The Infrastructure
A company acquires technologies based on its strategic plan. For example a staffing plan must be able to show how the resources will be managed, upgraded and maintained to keep supporting the activities of the company. A company may not be able to take advantage of each new technology out there, but can make great use of the technology it already has. It should also outline the ideas and the abilities of the workers so that the can be utilized in the best way to achieve the goals.

In today?s computer dominated world, information technology planning is important to assist businesses in achieving both short term as well as long term goals.

Maduro slams business leaders over Venezuela economy comments

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's vice president hit out at the country's business leaders on Saturday, saying they were seeking to destabilize the country while cancer-stricken President Hugo Chavez fights to recover from surgery.

Chavez has not been seen in public nor heard from in five weeks since his latest operation in Cuba, and his heir apparent Nicolas Maduro has taken on an increasingly visible role as the face of the government in the OPEC nation.

Accused by the opposition of presiding over a troubled economy afflicted by 20 percent inflation and shortages that the authorities blame on hoarders, Maduro rejects the charges as part of a malicious campaign against Chavez's leftist project.

The main private sector chamber, Fedecamaras, complained last week about the "urgent need" to address growing economic imbalances that it said were caused by insecurity, instability and misguided policies. That provoked a stern response.

"It takes your breath away, the hate they have for the Venezuelan people," Maduro said during a televised tour of a market selling state-subsidized food.

"Get lost, Fedecamaras! Here we have a revolutionary government that is going to continue pursuing hoarders, as well as the badness, intrigue and lies which you represent ... there is a psychological war to demoralize and confuse our people."

In Chavez's absence, former bus driver-turned-foreign minister Maduro has increasingly swapped his business suits for the casual tracksuits favored by his boss. But he has struggled to replicate the president's powerful folksy charisma.

For his latest Chavez-like state TV appearance, he adopted something of a greengrocer's manner at the open-air market in Carabobo state, inspecting pastries, holding aloft vegetables and remarking on the freshness of fish.

"Just in today ... so tasty, we only have this quality for you!" Maduro told a crowd of shoppers, many of whom wore red Socialist Party T-shirts and chanted: "We are Chavez!", "The people are with you!" and "(The opposition) won't return!"

Major policy decisions appear to be on hold while Chavez, 58, battles to return after his fourth cancer operation in just 18 months. That includes the question of devaluation of the bolivar currency that local economists say is long overdue.

A devaluation would increase state revenue from oil sales, but would also push up prices. In late 2011, Chavez's government extended controls that regulate prices of products ranging from meat to deodorant, while fixing profit margins.

That kept a lid on prices during 2012 despite blow-out government spending on popular welfare programs that helped Chavez win a new presidential term at an election in October, and helped Socialist Party candidates triumph in 20 of the country's 23 states at a gubernatorial vote in December.

A devaluation would also slow capital flight, and would ensure merchants have dollars to import basic products such as wheat flour that have disappeared sporadically in recent weeks.

OPPOSITION FUMES

Officials say Chavez's condition is improving but delicate and he suffered multiple complications after the December 11 surgery for a cancer first detected in his pelvic area in mid-2011.

Many Venezuelans suspect, however, that the socialist leader's extraordinary 14 years in power could be coming to an end.

Allies insist Chavez remains in charge and is giving orders from his hospital bed, though that infuriates the opposition who fume that the country's capital has been moved to Havana.

Opposition leaders are increasingly critical of what they say is a policy paralysis that has been caused by a reluctance among top officials to make decisions in Chavez's absence.

Outside a shopping mall in one wealthy Caracas neighborhood on Saturday, a clean-cut opposition activist asked a largely sportswear-clad crowd if they had had problems with shortages.

"Who couldn't find sugar this week? Who went from shop to shop looking for meat or chicken?" he asked, as most people put up their hands. "Things are much worse in the countryside."

If Chavez were to step down or die, a new election would be called within 30 days with Maduro as the ruling party candidate.

Surrounded by tables laden with produce in Carabobo, the vice president introduced the country representative of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, Marcelo Resende de Souza, who noted that there are 800 million hungry people in the world.

"But none of them are Venezuelan, because there is food security here!" he said, as Maduro nodded and the crowd cheered.

As time passes with no word from the normally garrulous Chavez, Maduro and other senior officials have been demanding critics respect the president's health and his family, while hoping he will be well enough to return home soon.

Information Minister Ernesto Villegas told a local TV channel he was reminded of the dramatic events of 2002, when Chavez returned after being briefly toppled in a coup.

"It can happen like that again," Villegas said. "It upsets some people, but President Chavez is alive and fighting."

Senior Democrat says Senate to finally pass a budget

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Democrats for the first time in more than three years will pass a budget, a senior Democratic lawmaker said on Sunday, fulfilling a basic task that Republicans have been urging them to do.

Senator Charles Schumer said, however, the spending plan will include proposed new revenue despite Republican warnings that they will not go along with any more tax increases.

"We're going to do a budget this year and it is going to have revenue in it, and Republicans ought to get used to that," Schumer of New York, the Senate's No. 3 Democrat, told NBC's "Meet the Press."

President Barack Obama's Democrats control the Senate, but have not passed a budget since 2010 amid disagreements within the party over possible spending cuts, particularly in entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.

This has drawn the ire of Republicans who accuse them of a dereliction of duty that has undermined efforts to reduce spending and the U.S. debt.

Washington is expected to reach the limit of its $16.4 trillion borrowing power by early March, and lifting the debt ceiling will allow the federal government to continue its work uninterrupted.

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives, in a major concession on Friday, said they would be willing to raise the debt limit for three months and, at the same time, drop their demand that any increase in the government's borrowing power be matched in spending cuts.

But Republicans said they would require the Senate to finally pass a budget that could include spending reductions as well as changes in the tax code.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, appearing on NBC with Schumer, called the House Republican plan "a step in the right direction" and accused the Democratic-led Senate of not doing its job.

Schumer called the House Republican offer "a major victory" for Obama, who has vowed to refuse to negotiate with Congress on the debt limit.

Besides, Schumer said, "We need a budget .... It's a great opportunity to get us some more revenues."

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said he is ready to focus on spending cuts in any budget negotiations, but considers tax increases a closed matter. The White House had said it would accept the three-month plan so long as it was not conditioned on spending cuts.

After the deadline for the debt ceiling increase, Congress faces a March 1 deadline to avert automatic spending cuts and a March 27 expiration of funding for government agencies and programs that could result in a partial federal shutdown.

A three-month debt limit extension would add a further deadline in April or May.

The recent separate deal between Congress and the White House to avert "the fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases on most Americans and severe spending cuts imposed a tax hike on many of the wealthiest Americans.

It renewed most tax cuts enacted by Republican President George W. Bush, but allowed those tax cuts on families with incomes of more than $450,000 to expire.

Just Explain It: Who pays for presidential perks?

Being the President of the United States comes with a tremendous amount of pressure and responsibility. However, the commander in chief does enjoy preferential treatment most of us will never experience.

Some of those perks include: having his limo transported by plane wherever he travels, getting to see first-run and not-released movies free of charge, never stopping for a stop light or sign and his own private zip code.

Which brings us to today?s Just Explain It.

What?s the value of the presidency when you add in all the perks for being Commander-in-Chief?

We may never be able to put a dollar amount on the value of the presidency. That?s because some of the costs associated with the position are buried in many different budgets and scattered between different governmental departments.

Let?s take a look at some of the presidential perks covered by your tax dollars. They not only make the president?s life easier, they?re for security and practical purposes too.

Number one -- the president?s salary is $400,000 a year. The Chief Executive also gets a budget for entertainment, business and travel expenses.

Number two -- Transportation. To get the president from place to place safely, he has Air Force One, Marine One and a limo available at a moment?s notice. A 2012 Congressional Research Service report found that Air Force One costs about $180,000 an hour to operate.

According to the Hawaii Reporter, one round-trip flight to Honolulu by President Obama last month cost about $3.2 million. But the president made two of them because of the fiscal cliff crisis. That doubled the price tag to $6.4 million.

Number three ? The White House. For the 2008 fiscal year, Bradley Patterson, a retired Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, estimated the cost of running the White House was almost $1.6 billion. And that amount didn?t include unpublished classified expenses.

The president?s White house staff also comes at a steep price. In 2012, the White House reported its payroll grew from $37 million in 2011 to $37.8 million. The list includes 468 names. 139 of which make more than $100,000 a year.

Number four ? Secret Service access. Protecting the President takes a great deal of manpower. The agency?s budget this year is $1.6 billion. A portion of that will go toward protecting president while in office and for life.

And number five ? Retirement plan. According to CNBC, President Obama will receive over $191,000 a year for life as soon as he leaves office.

A former president?s net worth can grow substantially in retirement. After two terms in office, The Atlantic magazine reported Bill Clinton?s net worth at around $40 million. The increase was due to numerous speaking engagements and book deals.

Advice On Weighing Job Offers - Business Insider

When I graduated from Brown, I had a very limited conception of jobs, careers, and what I wanted to do. Basically, I figured I should do some kind of thought work that paid well, but I wasn?t sure what.

Here were my original criteria:

1. Intellectual vs. Manual. Does the job require a lot of conceptual work where I ?used my brain??

2. Higher pay vs. Lower Pay. Do you get paid a lot? I didn?t have any real numbers in mind, but more money seemed better than less.

This was my original thinking in a nutshell: seek higher-paid thought work. So I went to law school and joined a big law firm. I found that my framework was totally unhelpful when I didn?t enjoy being a corporate lawyer at all.

After that, I started a company (that flopped), and worked at three other start-ups in tech and education. Over time I got a much better sense of the sort of thing that made a job enjoyable for me. I started categorizing the variables and came up with these:

3. Changing over Time vs. Repetitive. In some environments, roles shift and change each period depending on what the company?s needs are. On the other hand, many functional roles can become very repetitive if you perform similar tasks over and over again.

4. Broad Development vs. Specialization/Efficiency. Many jobs want you to become excellent at something and continue to do it. On the other end of the spectrum is a role where you're required to develop new skills because of evolving responsibilities (e.g., a manager at a growing company). Think a swiss army knife (generalist) versus a scalpel (specialist).

5. Managing/teaching others vs. Operating Individually. Some positions involve developing others and taking responsibility for larger groups of people (e.g., becoming the head of a sales department). On the other hand, many of those with specialized skills or creative roles operate independently much of the time (e.g., a lawyer, writer, doctor, artist).

6. Autonomy/Agency vs. Low Discretion. In some jobs, you are able to make choices how best to address a particular problem, and can exert some control over your own environment and schedule. In other roles, your discretion can be quite limited due to detailed hierarchies, policies, and procedures. (e.g., I found that I had relatively limited discretion as a lawyer because my schedule and environment were out of my control and the client makes most big decisions).

7. People/service-oriented vs. Institutions. In some organizations (e.g., a tutoring business), you directly serve people that you may even see face-to-face. In others, as is common in the professional service context, your clients are large organizations that are hard to personalize (e.g., consulting to a large pharmaceutical company).

8. Compensation for Value vs. Compensation for Time. In most established organizations, there are firm compensation and advancement guidelines, generally related to how long you?ve been there. If you create significant value for a company, it may not be reflected in compensation. In other more flexible contexts, it?s possible for an individual to be compensated according to the value he or she adds.

9. Creative vs. Established Process. If a company has done something before, it probably has a set of documentation, rules, and policies to apply, and as an employee you will be expected to follow the process. In other settings, either because of the nature of the activity or because it hasn?t been done before, you may innovate or implement something new (though if you?re smart you?ll often refer to other companies? best practices).

10. Building/Making Progress vs. Maintaining Position. If a company is growing, then people?s roles often grow and change and opportunities abound. You are much more likely to feel that you are building toward something and making progress with each passing month. If a company is fighting a defensive battle, contracting, or even staying level, opportunities are harder to come by and roles tend to be more stagnant. In a professional service environment, you often work on one engagement or deal after another, with one ending before the next begins.

11. Executing vs. Analyzing. In many analytical roles, you synthesize a great deal of data to produce a report, build projections, or make a recommendation. The output is the report, projection, or recommendation (e.g., as a consultant you build a report indicating how a company could lower costs). In an executive capacity, your output is the action or activity of the organization (e.g., opening stores, choosing what goods to sell, allocating resources to different marketing campaigns, etc.).

12. Team-Orientation vs. Individual Metrics. In many professional service environments, the unit of performance is based on the individual (e.g., how many hours an accountant or lawyer worked and billed, how many patients a doctor has seen, etc.). In other companies, the organization?s performance is measured more collectively because people from different departments are required to work together in order to achieve shared goals.

13. Uncertain Path vs. Predictable Track. In some situations, you can say with some certainty what the path forward is going to look like over the next number of years in terms of career progression. In others, your path forward will vary widely depending on how the company does and your role within it.

14. Sense of Ownership vs. Employee. In some companies, staff feel a sense of ownership over their work and the performance of the company due to the nature of the activity, company size, culture, or compensation mechanisms (e.g., stock ownership). In other environments, employees feel detached from their employer and see individual performance and company performance as largely unrelated.

15. Well-regarded vs. Obscure/Negative. Certain roles and organizations are admired by employees? families, peers, friends, and the community at large. Others are not as well-regarded or well-known.

16. Long-term vs. Transactional. In some industries and roles it is customary for employees to come and go every couple of years, particularly junior hires. In other environments employees may stay for extended periods of time to build long-term relationships.

17. Positive Impact vs. Neutral/Indeterminate. Some organizations have missions or conduct activities that produce a discernible, positive impact (e.g., developing a new technology that reduces pollution or improves a health care treatment, etc.). Other companies conduct activities that are neutral or unclear in impact.

This is an exceptionally long list of considerations. To make it a little bit handier, here?s a list of Job Traits:

1. Intellectual vs. Manual Thinking

2. Higher pay vs. Lower pay Compensated

3. Changing over Time vs. Repetitive Changing

4. Broad Development vs. Specialization/Efficiency Breadth

5. Managing/teaching others vs. Operating Individually Managing

6. Autonomy/Responsibility vs. Low Discretion Deciding

7. People/service-oriented vs. Institutions People

8. Fee for Value vs. Fee for Time Rewarded

9. Creative vs. Established Process Creating

10. Building/Making Progress vs. Maintaining Progressing

11. Executing vs. Analyzing Doing

12. Team Orientation vs. Individual Metrics Collaborating

13. Uncertain Path vs. Predictable Track Risk-taking

14. Sense of Ownership vs. Transactional Owning

15. Well-regarded in Community vs. Obscure/Negative Admired

16. Long-term vs. Transactional Committed

17. Positive Impact vs. Neutral/Indeterminate Contributing

I?ve found this more detailed framework much more useful, and I hope others find it helpful as well. It?s unrealistic to expect a job to hit every single note, particularly starting out. And every job has its fair share of trade-offs and need to manage relationships (e.g., even a CEO is beholden to directors, staff, investors/ownership, customers, etc.). But this set of job traits may help identify why particular roles are more or less appealing to you, and it?s useful to have a vision of what kind of role you?d like to move toward.

'American Idol' will live or die with Nicki Minaj

Imeh Akpanudosen / Getty Images

Nicki Minaj could be just what "American Idol" needs -- or not.

By Craig Berman, TODAY contributor

Opinion:?Change is in the air for ?American Idol's? 12th season: Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban are joining Randy Jackson on the judging panel; there will be fewer audition episodes and more emphasis on going away from the big cities to find talent; the field of finalists will be limited to 10; the product placements will be less obvious. (OK, that last part isn?t true, but a fan can dream.)

All this should make the show a bit more interesting, especially the audition tweaks. But the season will live or die with Minaj, the addition to the panel who has the greatest potential to revitalize the show -- and the biggest risk of going down in flames.?

Bringing the "Starships" singer to "Idol" is clearly designed to spice up a panel that offered far more buzz than excitement in the J.Lo/Steven Tyler era, and return some of the edge that went away when the judges joined the contestants in trying to be loved. It?s also a chance to appeal to younger viewers by adding an artist who actually has songs on the radio. (Heavily sanitized in order to pass muster, but on the radio nonetheless.)

Unlike Britney Spears and Demi Lovato on the last season of "X Factor," Minaj doesn?t have to worry about being sweet and likable. Hip-hop and rap artists rarely seek out a warm and fuzzy image, and many of her fans who tune in will judge her on the opposite: Does she back down from a confrontation, or does she stand up for herself regardless of how much overtime she makes the poor Fox censors work?

Few are going to buy a Nicki Minaj record simply because they like her. Even if they try, most would be put off by the ?explicit? tag that accompanies many of her downloads on iTunes. "Idol" isn?t a show that attracts contestants in Minaj?s category, so she doesn?t have to worry about the competition, or about seeing a bunch of people trying to cover one of her singles and failing miserably.

What this means is that she has little to lose from speaking her mind. She?s got incentive to rock the boat. Controversy would only help her.

Let?s have some disagreement!
Frankly, it would give the show a boost.

?Idol? hasn?t been appointment television in recent years as much as it has been comfort food. It?s been a nice show where nice people sing and get voted off while the judges cry and moan about how sad it is that not everyone can win.

Throughout ?Idol?s? history ? and certainly since Simon Cowell left ? the drama between the judges has been so forced that it?s been painful to watch. Over the past two seasons, it was a rare event that saw dissent even during the audition process. ?Idol? works better when the judges don?t move in lockstep, since it gives viewers both allies and adversaries to talk about. If everyone is great and everyone deserves stardom, who cares who wins?

While the only data we have to work with so far are the promotional activities Minaj has done for the show, the reported tension between her and Carey on set is only going to make the show more entertaining. Viewers wouldn?t expect them to agree, since the two occupy very different positions in the musical landscape, and watching them bicker over a hopeful would provide a much-needed jolt of electricity.

Minaj talks a good game about not caring about the contestants' back stories as much as she does the talent. She says she won?t back down from an argument.

That just might get the show the excitement it been missing.

How do you predict Nicki Minaj will do on "American Idol"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Dell's stock soars on report of possible buyout

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) ? Dell's stock soared 13 percent Monday on a report that the struggling personal computer maker is in talks to take the company private.

Citing unidentified people familiar with the situation, Bloomberg News said Dell has discussed a potential sale with at least two firms that specialize in buying companies whose stocks have fallen out of favor. The report didn't name the interested firms.

Dell Inc., based in Round Rock, Texas, declined to comment.

Any effort to take the company private would probably require the backing of Dell CEO and founder Michael Dell. He is the company's largest shareholder with a 15.7 percent stake.

A buyout also would be expensive, despite a 30 percent drop in Dell's share price during the past year. Before buyout speculation drove up the stock price Monday afternoon, Dell's market value stood at about $19 billion.

Dell stock's surged $1.41, or 13 percent, to close at $12.28. Earlier in the session, it touched its highest level since May, at $12.83. At one point, the stampede to snap up shares triggered a temporary halt in their trading on the Nasdaq market.

ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall believes Michael Dell and the rest of the company's board might be willing to sell at $15 or $16 per share, which would translate into an offer of $26 billion to $28 billion. In a research note Monday Stern Agee analyst Shaw Wu believes a buyout is unlikely because of the financing that would be required to pull it off.

The possibility of a buyout had already been floated by Marshall and other industry analysts who believe Dell might be better off trying to engineer a turnaround without having to deal with pressures from Wall Street to reverse a recent slide in revenue that has dragged down its stock.

Like most other PC makers, Dell has been hurt as more consumers embrace smartphones and tablet computers for Web surfing. The shift has curtailed demand for laptop and desktop computers, causing PC sales to fall last year for the first time since 2001.

Dell has been trying to adapt by reducing its dependence on PC's. The company has been expanding into business software and technology consulting services, two areas of technology that are more profitable than making PCs.

Hewlett-Packard Co., the only PC maker in the U.S. that's larger than Dell, is attempting a similar transformation.

Some analysts have argued that HP should be broken up so its PC and computer printer businesses operate separately.

HP rose 79 cents, or 4.9 percent, to close at $16.95 Monday.
