Turk gets life term for role in journalist killing (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A Turkish court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life in prison for masterminding the killing of an ethnic Armenian journalist hated by hardline nationalists, but acquitted all 19 suspects of charges of acting under a terrorist organization's orders.

The verdict deeply disappointed the lawyers and family of Hrant Dink, who was gunned down outside of his office five years ago. Fethiye Cetin, a lawyer for the Dink family, said the trial failed to shed light on "the darkness" ? alleged connections between the suspects and some state officials.

The case has been widely seen as a test of whether the judiciary can fully investigate possible negligence by authorities, who allegedly knew about plots to kill the journalist.

It also highlights Turkey's uneasy relationship with its ethnic and religious minorities, which include at least 60,000 Armenian Christians in a mostly Muslim nation of more than 70 million.

After the decision, hundreds of activists began marching toward the scene where Dink was gunned down outside his Agos newspaper and promised to gather again at the spot of his murder on Thursday, the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 19 killing.

"This case is not over ... for us this case is just starting," said Cetin, vowing to appeal the verdict and likening the trial process to a "comedy."

A panel of judges found Yasin Hayal guilty of instigating Dink's killing, and gave him the life term despite a plea by a prosecutor that the court should sentence seven of the suspects to life in prison, including Erhan Tuncel ? who until now has been portrayed as another key instigator.

The court, however, sentenced Tuncel to 10 1/2 years in prison for a separate crime, his role in a bombing a McDonald's restaurant in 2004 in Black Sea port city of Trabzon and ordered his release from prison since he already completed his term while awaiting a verdict.

Dink had angered nationalists and had been prosecuted under Turkish law for describing the mass killings of Armenians in the early 20th century as genocide. Turkey denies the deaths constituted genocide, insisting those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.

Gunman Ogun Samast was sentenced to nearly 23 years in prison in July for "premeditated murder" by a separate, juvenile court. Samast was allegedly connected to Hayal but the court decision suggested the suspects who know each other were not acting as a gang and that Samast carried out the assassination alone under orders from Hayal.

Pakistan PM Gilani wins key backing in Parliament

Pakistan's Parliament passed a key resolution Monday that backed Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani as he faces pressure from the Army and the Supreme Court.

Pakistan?s Parliament passed a key resolution Monday night calling for the country?s other state institutions ? the Army and Supreme Court ? to remain within their constitutional limits.

The resolution is a welcome boost for beleaguered Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani who earlier in the day was charged by the Supreme Court with contempt for failing to reopen old corruption cases against his ally President Asif Ali Zardari. If found guilty, Mr. Gilani faces dismissal and the possibility of jail time.

Gilani described Monday?s vote as ?a welcome day for democracy,? adding that it endorses Parliament?s supremacy.

Pakistan's military traditionally enjoys wide latitude in shaping the country's national security policies and has stepped in numerous times?? often with the Supreme Court's blessing???to overthrow civilian governments that challenged its authority. The Gilani government has been trying to circumscribe the military's role particularly after the embarrassing discovery of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in a military garrison town last year.?Last week, Pakistan?s Army issued a statement criticizing the Prime Minister and promising ?grievous consequences,? raising fears of another military coup.

Today's backing in Parliament suggests Pakistan's political leadership prefers Gilani and his government to stay in office until elections expected later this year. This support from Parliament, as well as recent warm statements by Gilani toward the military, have tamped down the concerns about a coup ??for now.

Zaffar Abbas, editor of leading-English daily Dawn, says the resolution will strengthen Gilani's hand, despite a last-ditch walk-out by some opposition parties.

?The majority want the system to continue. If a consensus had been reached they would have liked it, but still the house has passed it,? he says.

However, the future of the government still remains uncertain as it faces down two major cases in court.?

The first concerns a political amnesty known as the National Reconciliation Ordinance which was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2009. When the Court overturned the amnesty, it expected Gilani to help reopen old corruption cases against President Zardari.

Zardari argued, however, that as head of state he enjoys immunity from prosecution, and Gilani did not pursue it. That may change as court pressure on Gilani mounts.?

According to Supreme Court advocate Feisal Naqvi, the ruling Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) may end up sending a letter to Swiss authorities to help reopen the old cases against President Zardari before the next date of hearing on Thursday, in order to avoid Gilani?s dismissal.?

Mr. Abbas, on the other hand, says the judiciary is more likely to get the prime minister?s legal team to respond to the contempt charges rather than dismissing the prime minister.

The second case relates to a secret memorandum sent by unknown persons to the United States, seeking American help in curtailing Pakistan?s Army. Zardari denies any role in the scandal, which cost former Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani his job. Mansoor Ijaz, a US businessmen who says he co-authored the memo and brought it to light, is due to give evidence to the court on Jan. 25.?

A further interesting aspect to Monday?s vote was a failure by Pakistan?s main opposition party, the PML-N, to side with the government despite a recent record of standing up to the Army. The resolution still passed with a majority of parliament including some members of other opposition parties.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali, leader of the opposition in parliament, attempted to table amendments to the resolution requiring the government to endorse all orders of the Supreme Court and refrain from making hostile statements toward the Army in public. When those amendments failed, he led a walk-out, saying: ?There is no threat to democracy. This incompetent government is trying to support itself through this hollow resolution.?

According to senior Pakistani journalist Amir Mateen, the statements represent a mellowing of the party?s anti-Army stance which it has held since elections in 2008 and may be the result of an attempt to make political hay in what politicians and pundits alike expect to be an election year.

ABC ditches 'Work It' sitcom (omg!)

PASADENA, California (AP) ? ABC television's "Work It" is off duty.

The network said Saturday that the TV comedy about two men who dress as women to look for work is off the schedule after only two episodes aired. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation had protested the series, saying it mocked the transgender community.

"Work It" attracted little interest from viewers. The Nielsen company said the second episode on Tuesday was seen by less than five million people.

GLAAD's Herndon Graddick said Saturday that it was an outdated show. But he said it started a dialogue about discrimination faced by transgender people.

Small group search

So, i have this idea bubbling in the back of my mind, like they often do, but i think i need a small group instead of just one partner for this one. It's not really set in stone as of yet, but i'll see if i can lay out the basics.

So the idea is fairly simple so far. I was thinking something a little more medieval. In one particular castle there are secrets being passed through the halls and there seems to be an untold agreement among those who live there, that no one should speak of the things happening. The secrets are all various levels of extreme. The king may not be who he says he is, the queen has taken a lover. The prince sneaks out in the dead of night for a forbidden meeting.

So thats pretty much the idea. A castle full of secrets that no one openly speaks about, though everyone knows whats going on.

If anyone has any interest then send me a message ^_^

'Extinct' tortoises may still be roaming a Galapagos island

A giant tortoise species studied by Charles Darwin and believed to be extinct for more than 150 years may be alive and well, an ambitious genetic survey has revealed.

Blood sampling of more than 1,600 tortoises on the largest Galapagos island, Isabela, has revealed that about 84 of them had at least one purebred parent from a supposedly extinct species that once lived at the other end of the archipelago.

Researchers hope they can find these tortoises in the flesh on Isabela Island, breed them in captivity and then release them back onto Floreana Island, their native home.

The study, published in Tuesday's edition of the journal Current Biology, may be the first rediscovery of an "extinct" species ever made through looking for genetic markers in hybrid offspring.

The giant tortoise, among the largest living reptiles on Earth, is an icon of the Galapagos Islands, which take their very name from the Spanish word for tortoise, gal?pago. The creatures are thought to have arrived on the volcanic islands about 2 million to 3 million years ago from the South American mainland.

Each tortoise species ? some larger, with domed shells, and others smaller, with saddleback shells ? was unique to a particular island or volcano, living and evolving in isolation from the others. The diversity of tortoise species Darwin saw during his 1835 visit to the Galapagos Islands partly inspired his theory of evolution.

"I never dreamed that islands, about 50 or 60 miles apart, and most of them in sight of each other, formed of precisely the same rocks, placed under a quite similar climate, rising to a nearly equal height, would have been differently tenanted," Darwin wrote in "The Voyage of the Beagle," first published in 1839.

But within just a few years of Darwin's voyage, one of the tortoises ? the saddleback Chelonoidis elephantopus, living on the southern Floreana Island ? had already vanished.

Darwin himself never saw one alive. Whaling ships and pirates had long hunted the animals for food and oil; tortoises were handy supplies to keep on board, as they could be stowed in the hull for months ? flipped on their backs so they couldn't escape ? without receiving food or water.

And humans introduced new threats on the islands. Rats from the ships preyed upon tortoise eggs; goats trampled them and devoured the islands' vegetation. All tortoise species around the Galapagos Islands suffered from the onslaught; but perhaps none more than Chelonoidis elephantopus. By 1850, it was gone.

In recent years, however, scientists sampling a different species, Chelonoidis becki, came across a surprising discovery. Within this population of tortoises native to Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island, there were a handful bearing traces of Floreana tortoise DNA in their genomes. At some time in the past, it appeared, the Floreana tortoise had made it to ? and mated on ? Isabela.

Spurred on by this suggestion that the Floreana tortoise might still exist on Isabela, the researchers, led by population geneticist Ryan Garrick, who is now at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, decided to look more closely.

Garrick and colleagues took blood samples from 1,669 tortoises living on Wolf Volcano ? about one-fifth of the tortoise population there ? and ran them against a database of tortoise DNA.

The analysis showed that 84 of the tortoises had more than just traces of C. elephantopus within them: One of their parents was purebred C. elephantopus, a creature supposedly extinct for more than a century and a half.

Based on genetic analysis, the scientists estimate that about 38 C. elephantopus tortoises had parented these offspring on Wolf Volcano. And though many of those parents may not be alive today, some probably are. Thirty of the 84 hybrids Garrick and his co-workers found were less than 15 years old, and the creatures are thought to live for more than 100 years. Purebred parents are very likely still roaming the volcano.

It's just a matter of finding them.

George Amato, director of the genomics program at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, called the results "very exciting."

"To be honest with you, I can't think of another example of this kind of work on endangered species that's done such a detailed job of reconstructing this very interesting history," Amato said.

The researchers have some thoughts on how the tortoises managed to get from one of the southernmost islands to the archipelago's northwestern edge. Fast-moving whalers, or pirates looking to reduce their load while fighting or fleeing, may have hurriedly dumped the animals, taken along for food, at sea.

"These guys don't swim, but they float like a wine cork in a bathtub," Garrick said. "The prevailing current goes northwest in the ocean, making [Isabela] island the last place they would catch land before getting swept into the north Pacific."

The search is now on for live, purebred C. elephantopus tortoises on Isabela. If they're found, the researchers hope to start a breeding program in captivity to raise more of them and then bring them back to their native Floreana.

Tortoises are a very important part of an island's ecosystem, Garrick said. They keep the prickly pear cactus in check by grazing on it and, by relieving themselves around other parts of the island, also act as the plant's primary seed-dispersal method.

Even if the purebred tortoises don't turn up, intensively breeding the most promising hybrids could be useful as well, Garrick added.

"This really comes down to not giving up on biodiversity conservation, even when things look grim," he said.

Razer Naga Hex Gaming Mouse hands-on (video) -- Engadget

Ready to give your right thumb a workout? We just tested our hand stamina with the recently-outed Razer Naga Hex Gaming Mouse. The programmable, six-button side panel also sports a thumb rest in the center of the control set -- something we found to be a nice touch. If the stock feel of the buttons doesn't exactly suit your gaming style, you can switch them out for two other heights for a better grasp of things. Shipping this spring, it'll set you back $80. So is the Naga Hex a sound investment? Read on to find out.

The first thing we noticed about the Naga Hex was how lighting fast it was. We didn't experience any lag in the movement, something we've come to count on from Razer peripherals. There was the slightest bit of travel with button set on the right side, though, which is something that could change once you pop on those interchangeable heights. Those side buttons also boast speeds of up to 250 clicks per second, making those all-too-important macros keep pace with your MW3 tactics. Naga Hex is the first Razer device to sport Synapse 2.0, a cloud-based service that manages all of your custom settings even when you head over to mates house. Scroll wheel and buttons up top work like a charm as well, making it a nice piece of kit to add to your gaming rig.

Republicans hope for "yes" on Keystone, prepare for "no" (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Congressional Republicans who are urging President Barack Obama to approve the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline have signaled they will not give up on the issue if the White House says no.

After delaying the project, Obama has been compelled by Congress to decide by February 21 on whether to approve the project that would sharply boost the flow of oil from Canada'a oil sands.

Early work has begun on legislation that could make Obama take yet another look at the stalled pipeline should the project be rejected in February, Republican aides told Reuters.

The language could be included in legislation that will be needed to extend a payroll tax cut that expires on February 29.

TransCanada Corp's oil sands pipeline has put Obama in a political bind at the start of what is expected to be a difficult re-election campaign, and has become a useful tool for Republicans seeking to portray Obama as dithering on a project that they believe would create 20,000 jobs.

Environmental groups, an important part of Obama's political

base, have made defeating the line a top priority. They are concerned about the carbon emissions that come from processing the oil sands, and they argue the project will create fewer than 5,000 jobs.

The White House in November delayed its decision on Keystone to find a new route around environmentally sensitive lands in the Nebraska portion of its route. This effectively punted the decision beyond the November U.S. presidential election.

Republicans struck back by inserting language in the December payroll tax cut bill that gave Obama 60 days to grant a permit for the project or explain why it was not in the national interest.

Republicans hope that rising gasoline prices will increase pressure on the White House as the United States pushes for more sanctions on Iran to discourage countries from buying its oil.

Richard Lugar, top Republican on the Senate Foreign Affairs committee and lead sponsor of the Keystone bill, said it does not make sense to slow an oil pipeline from a reliable supplier such as Canada.

"Even if in the future we do not ourselves consume all the Canadian oil imported, having that crude in the U.S. system would give us tremendous flexibility to deal with supply shortages caused by conflict, political manipulation, terrorism, or natural disaster," Lugar said in a January 6 letter to Obama.

CONTINGENCY PLANS

North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, a Republican who helped draft the Keystone language in the current bill, is already working on new legislation in the event the president turns down the pipeline, said an aide, Ryan Bernstein.

A Senate Republican leadership aide said that if Obama refuses to certify the Keystone project by the February 21 deadline, Republicans likely would insist on a new extension, possibly another 60-day deadline.

That would leave a decision on the job-creating project at Obama's doorstep in late April, just as his presidential re-election bid intensifies.

"I suspect we'll want some level of clarity on which way they're (the Obama administration) leaning" on Keystone in the upcoming payroll tax negotiations, another senior Senate Republican aide said.

But the aide said it was too early to say what mechanism might be used to ratchet up the pressure on Obama if he does not fully grant the permit during this 60-day period.

'ANY AND ALL LEGISLATIVE OPTIONS' IN PLAY

A spokesman for House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner did not want to comment on whether House Republicans would seek to include a new Keystone deadline in the next payroll tax cut bill.

The White House and State Department have laid some ground for saying no, said Lee Terry, a Republican congressman from Nebraska who is a prominent advocate for Keystone on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

In December, the administration said imposing the 60-day deadline could violate environmental laws, effectively ruling out a permit.

A majority of voters support the pipeline, Rasmussen poll results from late December show, and most labor unions support it too. Saying "no" to the pipeline could turn it into an election issue, Terry said in an interview.

Obama could try to appease both sides by agreeing to the line conditionally, declaring the project is in the national interest, but making a permit contingent on further study of routes through Nebraska.

But Terry said he believes Republicans will consider "any and all legislative options" if the pipeline is delayed further, including but not limited to making it part of the next payroll tax package.

"Right now, I think everything is on the table," he said.

Snoop Dogg arrested in West Texas on pot charge

snoopbbb.JPGThe El Paso Times reports that rap star Snoop Dogg was arrested Saturday morning in Sierra Blanca, on Interstate 10 east of El Paso, after authorities found marijuana in his tour bus.

According to the newspaper, when the bus was stopped at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint around 3 a.m., agents smelled marijuana.

A drug-sniffing dog was called in, and the dog led the agents to a trash can in the back of the bus, according to the El Paso newspaper. In it was "a red prescription bottle containing marijuana cigarettes."

Agents also found two other containers of marijuana -- in all, a little more than a tenth of a pound.

Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr., admitted that the marijuana was his.

He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Snoop's Twitter account, he was in San Antonio on Sunday to watch a youth football game between an under-15 U.S. team and Canada.

According to the El Paso Times, after Willie Nelson was arrested on a marijuana charge in 2010 at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Snoop Dogg told TMZ:

They better leave Willie the [expletive deleted] alone, man. Willie Nelson is a legend. Sometimes you need to back up off of certain people and have a certain amount of respect for your elders. And Willie Nelson is our elder. Willie Nelson is my people. If you got a problem with Willie Nelson, you got a problem with me.

Manila alert lifted as parade ends without attack (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Philippine authorities lifted a security alert in the capital Tuesday after millions of Roman Catholic devotees paraded a statue of Christ through the city for 22 hours without a terrorist attack.

Authorities had deployed a massive police cordon after the president warned over the weekend that terrorists might target the raucous annual procession. After the parade ended, they declared the event a success and lifted the security alert in Manila.

The government did not have specific intelligence on a terrorist plot. Still, about 15,000 policemen, backed by hundreds of army troops, secured the three-mile (five-kilometer) procession route for the charred wooden Black Nazarene statue from seaside Rizal Park to a popular church in Manila's congested Quiapo district.

Air force helicopters stood by and cellphone service was blocked in procession areas to prevent its use to trigger bombs. Despite the president's warning, huge crowds of devotees wearing maroon shirts surged near the statue, believed to have healing powers.

Devotees waving handkerchiefs and towels let out shouts of "Viva!" as the statue was finally brought inside the church at the end of the grueling procession.

The Philippine Red Cross said more than 500 devotees were treated for minor injuries, exhaustion or dehydration.

President Benigno Aquino III announced at a hastily called news conference Sunday that several terrorists had been reported in Manila with plans to disrupt the procession, but that the threat was not high enough to cancel the event and that police would work to keep it safe.

Aquino's warning sparked one of the most elaborate security deployments for an event in the capital in recent years.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said the threat, involving possible bombings by two groups of Muslim militants from the country's volatile south, prompted police to raid several suspected terrorist hideouts in the Manila area, but without any results.

There were suspicions that attackers might come from two radical Muslim groups, including the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf, which is on a U.S. list of terrorist organizations for deadly bombings, kidnappings and beheadings.

"I agree with the assessment of the Manila police district that it was a success, but a bit too long," Chairman Francis Tolentino of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said Tuesday.

The procession was delayed for hours because the wheels of the carriage carrying the statue broke.

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said the government's warning may have helped kept the event peaceful.

The security alert in Manila was lifted after the procession ended, Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo said.

Police said at least 3 million mostly barefoot devotees took part in the event.

The wooden statue of Christ, crowned with thorns and bearing a cross, is believed to have been brought from Mexico to Manila in 1606 by Spanish missionaries. The ship that carried it caught fire, but the charred statue survived and was named the Black Nazarene.

Some believe the statue's survival of fires and earthquakes through the centuries and intense bombings during World War II is a testament to its powers.

The Philippines is Asia's largest predominantly Roman Catholic nation.

Tibet group says 2 set themselves on fire in China (AP)

BEIJING ? A Tibet activist group says two people have set themselves on fire in southwest China in the latest in a series of apparent self-immolation protests against Chinese rule.

The London-based Free Tibet said in an emailed statement late Friday night that witnesses saw a man set himself on fire Friday near a monastery in Aba prefecture in Sichuan province. It says security forces put out the flames and took the man away. His condition is unknown.

Free Tibet says someone else died about the same time in a self-immolation nearby. It gave no other details.

The claims could not be independently confirmed. A woman who answered the phone at the prefecture government office on Saturday said she did not know anything about the incidents and hung up without giving her name. Calls to local police offices rang unanswered.

Aside from the latest claims, at least 12 monks, nuns and former monks are believed to have set themselves on fire in the past year in what are seen as acts of desperation in the face of tightening Chinese controls over Tibetan life and culture. Most of the incidents have occurred in heavily Tibetan areas of Sichuan.

Most of the protesters who set themselves on fire are calling for Tibetan freedom and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled to India during an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

China says Tibet has always been part of its territory, but many Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for centuries.

Chinese authorities routinely deny Tibetan claims of repression, although they have confirmed some self-immolations and accused supporters of the Dalai Lama of encouraging such acts. The Dalai Lama and representatives of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile in India say they oppose all violence.

Science suits former Vancouver mayor

Did you know?

A Pacific Science Center display that opens on May 24 will be the last showing of King Tut artifacts in the United States, as Egypt prepares to open a museum in Cairo. (The Golden King won?t be making the trip to Seattle; Tutankhamun?s remains have never left Egypt).

Eight institutions in Washington are affiliated with the Association of Science-Technology Centers: one each in Spokane, Pullman, Mukilteo and Bellevue; two in Richland and two in Seattle.

Bryce Seidl was a neighborhood association pioneer who wound up on the city council, then was twice elected mayor of Vancouver.

Through it all, he showed a sense of community involvement, an understanding of the wider world and a respect for history.

Some things have changed since 1987, but it?s just a matter of scale. The community Seidl leads these days is a worldwide association of science centers.

And as far as history goes, Seidl?s day at work might include the Dead Sea scrolls or artifacts from the tomb of King Tut.

Twenty-five years after his tenure as Vancouver?s mayor ended, Seidl is president and CEO of Pacific Science Center in Seattle.

Seidl is in his eighth year in the position, after a business career that included a series of corporate transfers and roles in several nonprofit and community-based organizations.

?It was a tortuous path, but lots of fun,? Seidl said in a recent telephone interview from Seattle.

In his current post, ?I work with really smart people who are really interested in the future of the community and the nation,? Seidl said.

The basic mission of Pacific Science Center, he said, is to present complex science to general audiences.

Seidl also has a more whimsical description of the job: ?Our role is to amuse, to beguile, to stimulate, to inform.?

The center is a place where science helps people ? especially kids ? understand the natural world, as well as the man-built world.

?One of our standout skills is linking current research in labs with general public audiences,? he said.

?A particularly interesting example was an exhibition around the Dead Sea scrolls,? he said. In addition to the scrolls, the exhibit showed the technologies scientists used to understand the 2,000-year-old Hebrew texts.

?Multispectral imaging, DNA analysis: You can take a snippet and you can tell from the DNA what kind of animal it came from,? he said. DNA matching also was used to reassemble pieces of fragmented scrolls.

In May, the Science Center will open an exhibit of Egyptian artifacts ?

?Tutankhamun: The Golden King and The Great Pharaohs? ? for a seven-month stay.

Working with giants

Seidl?s r?sum? got another bump recently when he was elected president of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, which represents more than 600 institutions in 44 countries.

Seidl said he got involved in the organization five years ago.

?I?m quite new, compared to many people? in the field, he said. ?And here I am working side by side with giants from around the globe.?

But he?s done that sort of thing before, he said.

?I?ve gone into different positions, and as a newcomer, you have a huge obligation to learn as much as you can about how it all works,? he said.

That describes his days as an involved Arnada-area resident, after his job with Simpson Timber brought Seidl to Vancouver.

?I got involved in a neighborhood association and the downtown development plan. That led me to public life.?

The Arnada Neighborhood Association became Vancouver?s first neighborhood association in 1977. Seidl joined the city council in 1978, and then was elected to two-year terms as mayor, in 1983 and 1985.

In looking back on his time in Vancouver, Seidl didn?t point to any particular civic advances.

But Bruce Hagensen, who succeeded Seidl as mayor, noted that ?he had two wonderful things on his watch.?

They included Seidl?s role in bringing a Japanese art exhibition to Vancouver in 1986.

?The Nihonga Exhibit was shown in London, Paris, Stockholm, Barcelona, Boston and Vancouver,? Hagensen said. ?We outdrew all of them but Boston.?

But the tour?s lasting legacy in Vancouver is the exhibition site ? the Marshall House. Seidl helped lead a $400,000 fundraising effort to restore the Officers Row structure into the landmark it is today, Hagensen said.

That was just part of the transformation of Vancouver?s historic core, Hagensen said. After the federal government decided to sell the buildings on Officers Row one by one, ?Bryce and I flew back and convinced the General Services Administration to turn Officers Row over to us for $1.?

Useful connections

Seidl?s political career ended when his employer transferred him to another Simpson operation. In the span of seven years, Bryce and his wife, Chris, moved their two kids from Vancouver to California, then to Michigan, then back to California before settling in Seattle. His career took another turn in 1998 when Seidl was named chief operating officer of Seattle-based Fisher Mills Inc.

During all those moves, he said, ?I had in my blood a sense of community responsibility, the things I valued when I was in Vancouver. We got involved in volunteer work.?

That included positions on the board of directors of a hospital, two colleges and the famed Pilchuk Glass School in Seattle.

During all those his business transitions, Seidl said, ?I had lots of opportunities, experiences and connections that are useful when running a nonprofit.?

As board president of the Pilchuk Glass School, Seidl spent a year as interim director. That?s when his path took another turn.

?One day the phone rang, and it was a board member from the Pacific Science Center. They thought of me while doing a president search, and I sent in a r?sum?. I didn?t know much about it, but I thought it couldn?t hurt. I?ll be darned: They decided to hire me.?

In his new job, Seidl became part of a trailblazing institution that began as the United States Science Pavilion during the 1962 Seattle World?s Fair.

?It had 6.9 million visitors in six months of the world?s fair. That was stunning,? Seidl said. ?It gave birth to a remarkable institution that was pacesetter for what?s become a global field.?

The day after the world?s fair closed, the pavilion got new life as the first U.S. museum founded as a science and technology center.

?A science center can take more risks than other community institutions,? Seidl said. ?It can have discussions in the community that other places can?t do because they could be controversial ? things like population increase, pollution, the environment.?

A science center also is quite a place to work.

?We are able to have science giants from all around the country: astronauts, undersea explorers. That, personally, is fun,? Seidl said.

Those adventurers ? as well as any researcher or scientist who can put a human face on discovery ? serve as inspirations to people of all ages.

?There never will be an exhibit more powerful,? he said, ?than someone who is articulate and excited about their work.?

Tennessee tops Florida 67-56

Florida coach Billy Donovan wasn't pleased with his team's effort in its fourth road loss of the season, a 67-56 upset at the hands of Tennessee. / Gator Country file photo by Tim Casey

Florida went on the road to take on a struggling Tennessee team as Southeastern Conference play began. An 11 a.m. start time didn?t do the Gators any favors, as the defending SEC champs sleep-walked into a buzzsaw.

Tennessee (8-7, 1-0 SEC) played aggressive defense, and the lethal Florida (12-4, 0-1 SEC) offense never got into sync, allowing the Vols to blow open the game in the second half in a 67-56 win.

?Regardless of how you?re being guarded, there?s always things that are open, there?s always things that you can do,? coach Billy Donovan said on the Gator Radio Network. ?We did not recognize what was open, what was available.?

Parents Camp at City Hall, Demand Meeting With Mayor

A small group of Chicago parents spent a second day Thursday camped out at City Hall demanding a meeting with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The parents, unhappy with the plan to close two underperforming schools and re-organize several others, drafted their own proposal to improve the schools.

They said they won't leave until Emanuel considers it.

"We're going to stay until what we want. And if we don't get what we want with this process, we have a lot of other means," said Shannon Bennett with the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization.

CPS?officials said they welcome input but can't accept failing schools.
?
A round of public meetings will be held Friday to discuss the proposed closings, consolidations and turnaround projects. Other meetings are scheduled for Jan. 20 and Jan. 23.

More jobs, better economy get credit for record car sales

DENVER -- Colorado car sales hit a record high in 2011, translating into good news for buyers and sellers alike.

And more jobs could be part of the reason people are buying a new ride.

The average car in Colorado is more than ten years old, making it the oldest fleet driven by Coloradans.

But that changed in 2011, according to Tim Jackson, with the Colorado Auto Dealers Association, who calls it "the biggest bump in new car sales we've seen, as far as percentage increase, anytime in modern history."

For auto makers like Nissan, it has been a banner year.

"Last month alone we've seen over a 200 percent increase over December 2010," said Mark Evans, sales manager at Tynan Nissan, who attributes the sales increase to growing consumer confidence, low interest rates and easier to get credit.

It's meant a major turnaround for Detroit's automakers, with Chrysler and Chevy rebounding from bankruptcy.

Overall, auto sales were up 14-percent in Colorado for 2011, which is good news for an industry hit with years of cutbacks and layoffs.

The increase in car sales, especially in fuel efficient vehicles, translates into a boost for the economy and for jobs.

"We've hired about 20-percent more people than when we bought the store, and in Greeley we've added about 50 people to a payroll that was non-existent," said Todd Maul, president of John Elway Dealerships.

"I've been in the car business 35 years now, and it's probably one of the best years we've seen," said Nissan's Mark Evans. "2012 only promises to be better."

Some dealers are even having a tough time hiring qualified staff. "Which is tough for the dealerships, but a really good sign?and strong sign for the economy," said Jackson.

Many analysts say the momentum should continue through 2012, and dealers say they hope to use that momentum by hosting a first-ever automotive career fair at the upcoming Denver Auto Show, which gets underway in late March.

Some dealers say they will be hiring qualified candidates on the spot.
